Health & Clothing
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving within 6 days from infected areas.
Vaccination against typhoid is advised.
Malaria risk, predominantly in the malignant falciparum form, exists throughout the year in the low altitude areas (eastern part) of the Limpopo Province, eastern part of Mpumalanga (including the Kruger National Park) and northeastern KwaZulu/Natal as far south as the Tugela River. The risk is highest from October to May.
Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is endemic in the north and east. Avoid swimming and paddling in fresh water - swimming pools which are chlorinated and maintained are safe.
South Africa’s climate is generally sunny and pleasant. Winters are usually mild, although snow falls on the mountain ranges of the Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and Natal and occasionally in lower-lying areas, when a brief cold spell can be expected throughout the country.
Required clothing: Lightweight cottons and linens and rainwear for summer. Warmer clothes are needed for winter.
Day 1: Hainaveld - Bushman Experience, camping
The safari begins in Maun, where your guide will meet you at 07h30 at a pre-arranged meeting point. You will travel 170km to a game farm on the northern border of the Central Kalahari Game reserve, set up camp and have a safari briefing. In the afternoon you will participate in a nature walk led by local Bushmen trackers. They will share their intricate bush knowledge and give you an insight into their unique and intriguing culture. (Lunch, Dinner)
**Day 1: Maun –Hainaveld Game Farm (northern border CKGR) : 170km, 4h
Days 2-5: Central Kalahari Game Reserve, camping
You will wake up as the sun rises and enter the pristine wilderness of the largest game reserve in Botswana. (45km) The next four days will be exploring the undeveloped wilderness of the northern region of the Kalahari, moving from camp to camp.
You will visit Passarge Valley and Deception Valley in your exploration of the Kalahari. Savour the vast open spaces, clear night skies and uninterrupted beauty on game drives and at camp. This is adventure camping in its purest form as water and communications are limited and we travel as a self-sufficient group. Camping is in a designated campsite with fixed/bush ablutions. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
**Day 2: Game Farm in Hainaveld – Central Kalahari Game Reserve: 120km, 6-7h (including game drive)
**Days 3-5: Extended game drives
Day 6: Maun, comfortable lodge
After our final morning game drive in the Kalahari we break camp and return to Maun where our last night will be enjoyed in the comfort of a lodge. Dinner is at your own expense at the lodge. The safari officially ends at 08h00 on Day 7. We can assist with your onward travel arrangements. (Breakfast, Lunch)
**Deception Valley, Central Kalahari – Maun: 340km, 5-6h
